WALKER, Brian and Ann HINCHLIFFE. In Our Liverpool Home. (Belfast): Blackstaff Press, (1978). Pp. [1]-104. Illustrated. 8vo, illustrated card covers. "The Liverpool portrayed in the pages of this handsome book was a city at the meeting point of its Victorian past and its twentieth century present. The wealth and enterprise of its port, its industries and its commerce had made it a handsome city, with broad avenues and grand buildings: a place to be proud of, as many of the fine photographs in this book show. It was alsoa city whose people knew hardship, where barefoot urchins and careworn wom en were a common sight, and long hours and low wages were the lot of thousands of working people. But these same people could find pleasure in simple things: at the street markets, on trips to the seaside, or simply gossipingon the doorstep with a group of friends. At the turn of the century accoun ts of Liverpool and its life appeared in novels, songs, reports, and newspaper articles. The author' selection from these, together with their lucid and informative commentary combine with the photographers' work to create a superb portrait of the city and of the people to whom it was "Our LiverpoolHome."
