"In this volume Arthur Waley has brought together a large number of articles, broadcasts and translations made in the last twelve years, as well as a considerable number of pieces hitherto unpublished. The most notable of the latter is The Secret History of the Mongols, consisting of long extracts from a thirteenth-century saga, and forming some of the most vivid primitive literatureto be found anywhere in the world. Hitherto known only to scholars, its va lue to ordinary readers has largely been overlooked. Amongst other pieces are those on the eight century Chinese poet Ts'en Shen, and the greatest of Chinese prose-writers, Han Yu; Lo-yang (the fourth century capital of China) and Its Fall; Some Chinese Ghosts; The Poetry of Chinese Mirrors; Blake the Taoist; some translations from Aina (including The Ainu Epic); etc. At the end of the volume are some original poems and stories, mostly unpublished until now." - from the dj.
