"Those who know the novels of Jane Austen, and there are many, may also be aware of the fact that our knowledge of the writer herself is very limited. It is derived mainly froma few family sources, principally her letters ot her sister Cassandra. With these letters are five written to her niece Fanny, eldest daughter of her brother Edward Austen (who in gratitude to a rich benefactor changed his name to Knight in 1812). The letters written to Fanny, in 1814 and 1817 when she needed advice on whom she should marry, are both entertaining and profound. They show that, with a difference in age between them of only seventeen years, a warm relationship existed between aunt and niece." - from the introduction.

Contnets:
1. A Filial Flame;
2. The unfettered maiden;
3. Too agreeable as a niece;
4. The prime source of comfort;

6. Ever dear wife;

2 AUSTEN, Jane) LE FAYE, Deirdre Jane Austen's Letters. Third Edition, in dustjacket
Oxford University Press, Oxford / New York, 1996, ISBN:0198117647
(AUSTEN, Jane). Jane Austen's Letters. Third Edition. Collected and Edited by Deirdre Le Faye. Oxford / New York : Oxford University Press, (1996). Fourth Impression. Pp (4),v-xviii,1-643,(1). Index. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Jane Austen's letters afford a unique insight into the daily life of the novelist: intimate and gossipy, observant and informative--they read much like the novels themselves. They bring alive her family andfriends, her surroundings and contemporary events with a freshness unparal leled in modern biographies. Above all we recognize the unmistakable voice of the author of such novels as Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. We see the shift in her writing from witty and amusing descriptions of the social life of town and country, to a thoughtful and constructive tone while writing about the business of literary composition. R.W. Chapman's ground-breaking edition of the collected Letters first appeared in 1932, and a second edition followed twenty years later. Now in this third edition of Jane Austen's Letters, Deirdre Le Faye has added new material that has cometo light since 1952, and re-ordered the letters into their correct chronol ogical sequence. She has provided discreet and full annotation to each letter, including its provenance, and information on the watermarks, postmarks,and other physical details of the manuscripts, together with new biographi cal, topographical, and general indexes." (from the dustjacket flap). Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 50.00
