The American SBD dive bomber, known as the Dauntless, was involved in all five naval engagements fought exclusively by aircraft carriers, sinking more enemy carriers than any otheraircraft. Its presence at Coral Sea and Midway was a major factor in those battles, in particular. By the end of the of the Second World War it was t he only US carrier aircraft still in service that had been operational at Pearl Harbour. This is the account of the squadron that flew unexpectedly into the Pearl Harbour attack. The author, the son of an SBD Dauntless pilot,has also helped to restore one of these legendary aircraft, now on display in the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico, Virginia Vg in nicked dj. 25.00
