6 CUMMINS, Linda. Chiasma, 18). BISHOP, Michael, ed. Debussy and the Fragment. First Edition, Paperback.
Editions Rodopi, Amsterdam, 2006, ISBN:9042020652
CUMMINS, Linda. Debussy and the Fragment . Amsterdam: Editions Rodopi, 2006. Pp. (10),[11]-192. 8vo, illustrated purple card covers. Chiasma, number 18. General editor: Michael Bishop. "Rather than solid frames, some less than perfect aesthetic objects have permeable membranes which allow them to diffuse effortlessly into the everyday world. In the parallel universes of music and literature, Linda Cummins extols the poetry of such imperfection. She places Debussy's work within a tradition thriving on anti-Aristotelian principles: motley collections, crumbling ruins real or fake, monstrous hybrids, patchwork and palimpsest, hasty sketches, ellipses, truncated beginnings and endings, meandering arabesques, irrelevant digressions, auto-quotations. Sensitive to the intermittences of memory and experience and with a keen ear for ironic intrusion, Cummins draws the reader into the Western cultural past in search of the surprisingly ubiquitous aesthetic of the unfinished, negatively silhouetted against expectations of rational coherence. Theories popularized by Schlegel and embraced by the French Symbolists are only the first waypoint on an elaborately illustrated tour reaching back to Petrarch. Cummins meticulously applies the derived results to Debussy's scores and finds convincing correlations in this chiasmatic crossover." - from the rear cover. Very good. 30.00

11 BISHOP, Michael, and Christopher ELSON (eds.). French Prose in 2000.
Rodopi, Amsterdam / New York , 2002, ISBN:9042010533
BISHOP, Michael, and Christopher ELSON (eds.). French Prose in 2000. Amsterdam / New York : Rodopi, 2002. Pp [i]-viii,[1]-272. 8vo, green card covers, lettered in green. "French Prose in 2000 stems in some important measure f rom work presented in September 1998 at the International Colloquium on French and Francophone Literature in the 1990’s held at Dalhousie University. A good number of papers given at that time, and since revisited in the light of exchanges, join here certain others specifically written for the purposes of this book. Together they constitute a wide-ranging and modally varied interrogation of the current state of French and francophone prose writing, its multifaceted manners, its richly divergent fascinations, its many theoretical or philosophical groundings. The book thus ceaselessly moves its attention from fictional biography to the roman noir, from the writing of Glissant and Chamoiseau to that of the étonnants voyageurs, from the powerful discourse of women such as Chawaf or Condé, Ernaux or Germain, Sallenave or Kristeva, to that of writers as diverse in their modes as Le Clézio and Quignard, Duras and Renaud Camus. All chapters focus, however, in near-exclusive measure, on the prose production of the last ten or twelve years." - from the back cover. Very good. 40.00

"In 1784, Charles Bishop sailed from Br istol as master of the Ruby, a trading ship bound for north-west America. He had instructions to procure otter furs from the indians and then to proceed to Canton via Japan and sell the cargo. During the years 1794 - 1802, herounded South America to reach the Pacific coast, then visited the Pacific islands and the coasts of Asia and Australia. In the Moluccas he sold the Ruby and purchased the Nautilus; correspondingly, the text is divided into two sections. This narrative is Bishop's journal of his voyages and relatesa minor epic of adventure, courage and turbulent fortune. The record of hi s letters and financial accounts shows something of the ships' general organization, and of the seamen who served such expeditions. Bishop also describes the various ports and peoples he encountered; his experiences typify European contacts in the Pacific, and the reaction between trader, missionary, administrator and local inhabitant. Dr. Roe's introduction gives the background to the trading voyages of the eighteenth century and describes Bishop's own history. records of his life continue until 1809, ending tragicallyin Sydney, where he passed some years in poverty and insanity, before bein g returned to England." - from the jacket. - from rear.
