1 ROBERTS, Charles G.D.) BOONE, Laurel, (ed.) Collected Letters of Charles G.D. Roberts. First Edition in dustjacket

(ROBERTS, Charles G.D.). The Collected Letters of Charles G.D. Roberts. Laurel Boone, Editor. (Fredericton, N.B.) : Goose Lane Editions, (1989). FirstPrinting. Pp. 664. 8vo, dark grey cloth, gilt titles to spine. "Sir Charle s G.D. Roberts has often been called the "Father of Canadian Literature," the most vigorous and varied of the late nineteenth-century writers who gavedirection and impetus to a truly national literature. His letters, of whic h more than a thousand appear in this volume, demonstrate that there's moretruth than hyperbole in this description. Roberts began corresponding with other writers as soon as he himself began to publish. From the 1880s until about 1910, he encouraged and compared notes with Archibald Lampman, Willi am Wilfred Campbell, Duncan Campbell Scott, Frederick George Scott, and William Douw Lighthall. During World War I, Roberts wrote home to his family from Europe, expressing his devotion to Canada, the Empire and, above all, his craft. Later he began writing to the next generation of Canadian authors- E.J. Pratt, Pelham Edgar, Ralph Gustafson - and to Lorne Pierce with who m he discussed the state of Canadian publishing. His correspondence, brought together for the first time in this volume, offers fascinating insights into Roberts's private life while documenting the growth of Canadian literature from the 1880s to the 1930s."
