MELTON, Buckner F., Jr Hanging Offense. 1st US in dj Free Press, New York, 2003, MELTON, Buckner F., Jr. A Hanging Offense : The Strange Affair of the Warship Somers. NY: Free Press, (2003). First Printing. Pp. 301. 8vo, brown cloth spine with tan paper covered boards. A lesser known American equivalent to the story of the Bounty, this volume relates the story of a thwarted mutiny aboard the American brig-of-war Somers, during a training cruise for apprentice seamen. When the captain learns of a plot by several of the apprentices to kill the officers and turn the Somers into a pirate ship, Captain MacKenzie faces the choice of death from inaction, or court martial by dealing with the conspirators in what he deemed to be an appropriate fashion. The shocking results of this little known bit of American history led to the creation of the Naval Academy in its present form. Vg in dj. 25.00 Price:
