Sydney Smith - His Life, Wit and Wisdom; Our Mother-Age, or, The Times We Live In; Knowledge is Power; Thomas Hood - His Life and Poetry. Pp 287, 290-293 tell of Elisha Kane's June 1853 stay in St.John's while haeding north aboard the Advance, including his welcome by the Masons and their presentation to him of a Masonic flag to plant at the Pole. "She [Chemistry] gathers up the sweepings of flax and cotton mills, and other vile, worthless rags, and surpasses the dreams of the alchymist, by transmuting them into paper on which men's thoughts are stamped, and fluttered over the world." - p.457. Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was an Anglo-Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist, and philosopher who, after relocating to England, served for many years in the House of Commons of Great Britain as a member of the Whig party. He is mainly remembered for his support of the cause of the American Revolutionaries, and for his later opposition to the French Revolution.
