Harriman, aboard the steamship George W. Elder, for the purpose ofproviding detailed observations of the natural history of the region as fa r north as Kodiak Island, a geographical survey of the Alaskan coastline, as well as observing the native cultures of the region. It is the natural aspects of the expedition that produced the greatest discoveries and observations, and which make up the bulk of this volume.
