Calder traveled 40,000 miles in the Canadian North on behalf of UNI CEF, and here reports with suprising ambivalence on the changes that civilisation had wrought on the traditional lives led by the native peoples of the region. "Journalist's impressions from trips in the northern Canadian mainland and islands, accompanying scientists, doctors, R.C.M.P., etc. in 1955. Norman Wells, Aklavik, Resolute, Fort Simpson, Agricultural Research Station, Yellowknife mines, Churchill, Cornwallis Island, etc. and Thule in northwest Greenland are described.
