First published in 1928 The Downfall of Temlaham is the work of the distin guished Canadian ethnologist, the late Dr. Marius Barbeau. A prolific writer whose contribution to our knowledge of Indian and French-Canadian folklore, arts and crafts is unsurpassed, Barbeau offers in this book a sympathetic and dramatic portrayal of a vanquished race in conflict with itself. Based on the facts of a serious disturbance among the Indians of the Upper Skeena River in 1886, it is the story of Kamalmuk and Sunbeams, husband and wife, separated by opposing ambitions and the ambivalence of the Indian's attraction to the benefits of the white man's civilization and his revulsion against its excesses. Barbeau weaves into his interpretation of these events the legends of Temlaham, the ritual of authenticr tribal customs and the expressive but poetic language of a people in anguish."- from the dj. "Marius Barbeau's The Downfall of Temlaham, written and pub lished before the current deluge of works by self-styled authorities on Indian folklore, is indeed a joy to read." - Clutesi. But things turned out worse than expected, and in her forties, the gifted artist found herselfshoveling coal and cleaning up other people's messes. The House of All Sor ts is a collection of forty-one stories of those hard-working days and the parade of tenants -- young couples, widows, sad bachelors and rent evaders.Carr is at her most rueful, but filled with energy and an inextinguishable hope. Carr also ran a small kennel and bred bobtails to help out her meagr e income. In an additional twenty-five stories, she lovingly describes the mutual bonds of affection and companionship between her and her dogs.
