Pp. 84. 8vo, brown cloth spine with patterned brown paper covered boards, all edges specked red, gilt title to spine. A selection of letters from a variety of influential English MPs and figures in the Royal Navy, written during England's conflict with Spain in the West Indies, between 1739 and 1745. A large number of the letters are written either to or from Sir Charles Wager, who served as the First Lord of the Admiralty from 1733 to his death in 1742. Other prominent figures whose letters are contained herein include: Sir William Pulteney, the Earl of Bath, a Whig MP from Middlesex who was an ardent supporter of war with Spain ; Holles Newcastle (Thomas Pelham Holles), the Duke of Newcastle and brother to the future Prime Minister of England ; (Lord Charles) Cathcart, who was selected to lead the expedition against the Spanish forces in the West Indies in 1740 (but who died during the crossing) ; Sir Arthur Onslow, who served as Treasurer of the Royal Navy from 1734 to 1742 ; EdwardVernon, who was Vice-Admiral of His Majesty's Fleet, and commodore of Port Royal, Jamaica, from 1739 to 1742 ; C. Hardwicke, (Philip Yorke, the 1st E arl of Hardwicke), who was a member of the House of Lords, and an active supporter of the war ; Vere Beauclerk, (Charles Beauclerk, 2nd Duke of St. Albans), who was a high ranking member of the Admiralty after Wager's death (and who has the second-most letters contained herein) ; Bedford, (John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford), who was the First Lord of the Admiralty in 1744 under Pelham's reign as Prime Minister ; and Sandwich, (John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich), a future First Lord of the Admiralty, who at the time of his letter, was Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty, next-in-command under Bedford (later known for losing the American colonies "on his watch"). Lightfraying to head of spine, some splitting to outer rear hinge, slightly coc ked, light edgewear, some of p. 7 is fading, starting to crack between pp. 64-65, else very good. 750.00
