A broadsheet for Vienna's Neues Wiener Tagblatt for February, 23, 1898, the day Émile Zola was convicted for libel as a result of his role in the Dreyfus Affair. A month and a half prior, Zola had published his piece "J'Accuse" in a French paper, in defense of Dreyfus, who was facing false charges. The text of the broadsheet reads: "Zola verurtheilt! / Privattelegramm des "Neuen Wiener Tagblatt" / Paris, 23. Februar. / Die Geschwornen bejahten die Schuldfragen bezüglich Emile Zola's. Der Gerichtshof verhängt / über Zola des höchste Strasansmaß von einem Jahre Gesängniß und 3000 Francs Geldbuße." An interesting piece of late-nineteenth century literary and legal ephemera. Three horizontal creases and one vertical crease to sheet, one inch tear to bottom edge not affecting any text, short tear tomiddle crease catching the last "r" in "Februar", small nick to left-hand side of bottom crease, else vg. 200.00
