Holownia's han dsome photographs capture the isolation and severity of the landscapes theyportray. Contact printed from large format negatives taken with a banquet view camera from the mid-twneties, the format of the photographs lends strength to an already dramatic vision. The large, horizontal photographs are well-suited to preserving the remarkable detail of this vast, flat expanse of mud and marshland. Lochhead composed his poems while reflecting on the twenty-six photographs Holownia produced. He evokes the natural environment of the marshes, explores their history, and reminisces about times past. Thetwenty-sixc poems act as complements to the photographs, as parallel medit ations to the visual images. Together, Holownia and Lochhead present a compelling vision of the marshlands, balanced with power and grace." - from thedj.
