McGill-Queen's Native and Northern Series, No. 38. “George Hubert Wilkins, later Sir Hubert Wilkins, was considered by the author and broadcaster Lowell Thomas to be one of the most brilliant explorers of all time. A tall and lanky Australian, he was likened to Lawrence of Arabiafor his looks and his reputed fearlessness. This fame, however grew out of his numerous adventures during the 1920s and 1930s and little is known abo ut his earlier explorations, particularly his involvement as photographer for the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-16 led by the famed explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson. In The Making of an Explorer, Stuart E. Jenness uses excerpts from Wilkins' diary, supplemented by his own research, to reveal these formative years in Wilkins' career. Originally seconded to the Canadian Arctic Expedition for one year as its official photographer, he ended up staying for three, spending much of those extra years in discussions with Stefansson that were the beginning of a life-long friendship. Jenness describedWilkins' experiences along the coast of northern Alaska and throughout the central Canadian Arctic. He also details his successful 11914 expedition t o Banks Island at the behest of the Canadian government in search of Stefansson, who had gone missing on a sledding expedition some months earlier – an act that led to his promotion as second-in-command.” - from the dj.
