A splendid review of the development of shipping from antiquity to the end of the nineteenth century concentrating particularly on the development of the shallow-draft cargo vessels of the Netherlands. With one volume of historical analysis augmented by thematic maps, one volume reproducing historical images of ships, and one volume of specially-prepared, gorgeous chromolithographic images.
