Pp (8),9-303,(1), frontispiece + 14 pp plates. 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Translation of Béret Rouge. "The son of an immigrant Czech worker, Vaculik went to France at the age of five and became passionately in love with his adopted country. He fought for her in thewar and barely escaped with his life at Dunkirk. On his way to a prisoner of war camp in Germanv he and a companion escaped but the companion disappeared whilst crossing a deep river. Alone, Vaculik made his way across France to the Pyrenees, then over the mountains into Spain where he underwent the rigours of several Spanish prisons. After a further spell of prison in Portugal he managed to get a ship to England. To his chagrin he had to spend a short period of screening in Pentonville but after this he achieved his ambition of joining de Gaulle's forces and became a parachutist-saboteur. Vaculik describes vividly and engagingly his training and his reaction to hisBritish comrades. The story of his first drop in France is packed with thr ills and tension, culminating m his capture and subsequent miraculous escape from an S.S. execution squad. Five of his comrades were killed but he andan Englishman "Ginger" Jones evaded their pursuers and joined the Maquis. After the war he gave evidence against the Gestapo men who murdered his comrades — and then returned to happiness with the lady he had married in England." (from the dj). Contents : 1.
