LENTON, H.T. British Escort Ships . New York: Arco, 1974. Pp. 1-64. Illustrated. Large 8vo, illustrated black card covers. A volume in the World War II Fact Files series. "The Battle of the Atlantic lasted for five years, andduring that time a growing number of anti-submarine escorts were brought i nto service to protect shipping. Vast quantities of war material and entireexpeditionary forces had to go by sea from the United States to Europe, an d if Admiral Dönitz' U-Boats could have severed this lifeline Nazi Germany could have dictated its own peace terms. The best known escorts were the 'Flower' class corvettes, which were based on a whale-catcher design. The United States produced the destroyer escdort (DE) to meet an Admiralty requirement, and a larger number of these were handed over in 1942 to meet the critical shortage. British and Canadian yards turned out a series of frigates to meet the same requirement, and these proved most successful of all. WIththe exception of some of the earlier sloops and ex-US patrol frigates, the book gives a complete listing of all the front-line escorts in service wit h the RN and RCN." - from the front cover. Light shelfwear, sparse foxing, else very good. 20.00
