2 FREI, Norbert National Socialist Rule in Germany: The Fuhrer State 1933-1945
Blackwell, Oxford, 1993, ISBN:0631168583
FREI, Norbert. National Socialist Rule in Germany: The Fuhrer State 1933-1945. Oxford: Blackwell, 1993. Pp. [i]-viii,[1]276,[4]. 8vo, illustrated cardcovers. "The appointment of Hitler as Reich Chancellor on 30 January 1933 marks a break in German history. But was the way into the Second World War already determined by the events of that day? Norbert Frei's incisive history of the Third Reich demonstrates that, despite the widely acknowledged degree of consistency in its development, the path to catastrophe was not inevitable, that there were turning points and perhaps even alternatives. The last significant milestone on the march towards the 'Fuhrer State' was Hitler's coup against the Sturmabteilung and his former right-wing coalition partners on 30 June 1934, which Norbert Frei recounts in the first part. He then describes the internal development of Nazi rule in three phases: regimentation and coordination based on terror and violence; consolidation, in which the 'Fuhrer myth', aided by economic and foreign policy success, found increasing acceptance in the developing 'national community'; and finally, with the war, the new epoch of radicalization, which found expression in the murder of the Jews and the monstrous projects of social and racial purification of German society undertaken in the name of modernization."
