Of nautical interest: 4) At War in the Atlantic (1939-1945), in which, rejected by the Canadian Military on the grounds of being a "communist sympathizer", Garner joined the Royal Canadian Navy, as a victualler's assistant, and eventually served on board the former RCMP launch Eileen, the HMCS Arvida, thearmed yacht Moose, the corvettes HMCS Lunenburg and HMCS Battleford (in wh ich Garner's convoy was engaged by U-boats), and the HMCS Saskatchewan. Hisexperiences would serve as the inspiration for his first novel, "Storm Bel ow", set aboard a fictional corvette. Vg in dj. 20.00
