The Rhodes-Livingstone Papers, Number Three. “This [. ..] is a description of the traditional political constitution of a Bantu tribe in the extreme north of Nyasaland, and of the profound changes which modern conditions have made in that constitution. The most important of the changes are inevitable, given the general conditions of contact between Africans and Europeans in Central Africa; and this brings us to a realization of the inescapable limits within which any policy of Indirect Rule must be carried out.
