3 BARSS, Peter. Gordon, Joleen, craft notes. BARSS, Taiya. Older Ways : Traditional Nova Scotian Craftsmen. First Edition in dustjacket
Van Nostrand Reinhold, Toronto, 1980, ISBN:0442296282 1980 0442296282 / 9780442296285
BARSS, Peter. Older Ways : Traditional Nova Scotian Craftsmen. Craft notes by Joleen Gordon. Toronto : Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1980. First Printing. Pp[1]-142,(2). Double column. B&w photos throughout. 4to, brown cloth, gilt lettering to spine.

"There was a time, not long ago, when the survival of the small, often isolated communites of Atlantic Canada depended solely on the resourcefulness of their people. Combining their skills, energy and ingenuity, they were able to produce the tools and equipment needed for their way of life. Fishermen knit their own nets but often went to other people toget them rigged. Farmers relied on the blacksmith to forge shoes for their oxen and horses. Women met to hook mats, sew quilts and warp their looms. The men and women who possessed the skills to make these essential items did not think of themselves as artists; their work evolved ouit of the necessities of everyday life.

Older Ways is a book that beautifully captures the work of a few of the remaining traditional Nova Scotian craftsmen. Thirty are presented through their own words and in striking, often moving, photographs by Peter Barss. They talk about their values, the love they have for their work and their regret at the passing of a way of life. Some, like Jane Hiltz, who makes braided hats, are teaching their craft to younger people; others, like cooper Ray Gates, believe their skills will die with them: 'Today there'd be no pint in a young feller to learn how to make barrels... there's no call for apple barrels...They tell me for shipping...they want square boxes.'

Craft notes, written by Joleen Gordon and illustrated with delightful line drawings by Taiya Barss, provide additional interesting information on the history of each craft and how the objects are made and used." - from the dust jacket.
