HENDERSON, Richard RHODES, Philip L.) Philip L. Rhodes and His Yacht Designs. 1st in dj. International Marine, Camden, ME, 1981, ISBN:0877421285 HENDERSON, Richard. Philip L. Rhodes and His Yacht Designs. Camden, ME: International Marine, (1981). First American Printing. Pp. [i]-xiv,(2),[1]-415,(1). Illustrated. Double column. 4to, blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Toy 4788. "Philip L. Rhodes was one of the most versatile of all navalarchitects -- for nearly half a century, until his death in 1974, he was a t the forefront of yacht design, and his influence continues today. Operating under his firm's slogan of 'any size, any type, any service', he achieved an impressive design record and throughout his career spear-headed experimentation in new construction materials and techniques. Now Richard Henderseon has accorded Philip Rhodes the book that he has long deserved. Part Oneof the book is a brief biography of Phil Rhodes that relates his early int erest in boat design and the subsequent experiences that led to his wide-ranging and prolific career. It is a fitting preamble to the design historiesand analyses that follow. In the 44 chapters of Part Two, Henderson discus ses more than 100 of the best-known and most representative Rhodes yacht designs -- from 7-foot dinghies to 140-foot luxury craft. (The complete design index of 390 yachts appears in the Appendix to the book.) Among the many designs discussed in depth are: Escapade, Carina, Fandango, Caribbee, Kirawan, Tamaris, Caper, Hother, and Weatherly, as well as the class boats such as the Rhodes 19, the Rhodes Reliant, the Penguin, the Rhodes 27, and the original Dyer Dink. A great many plans (some previously unpublished) and photographs complement the analytical text and offer ample proof of Rhodes' exceptional talent and his undisputed 'eye of the boat'." - from the dj.
