An educational volume, written in the format of a series of lectures and discussions, by the British-Indian scientist and meteorologist, who served asa commander in the marine service in the East Indies prior to his scientif ic career. The bulk of Piddington's research was paid to studying the science of weather (one of the earlier sciences to embrace meteorology in earnest at this time). His pre-eminent work was the 1848 "The Sailor's Horn-book for the Law of Storms", which provided ample information to sailors in regards to the reading of the development of storms, particularly "cyclones", aterm which he coined in that work. This volume, contains the discussions o f "Mr Helmsley Senior" (an old naval officer), "Captain Wrongham" (an old master of a merchantman), "Mr Severn" (a mate of a merchantman who has just obtained a command", and "George Helmsley" (nephew to Mr. Helmsley, a youngmate of a merchantman, just out of his apprenticeship), with topics rangin g from the formation of hurricanes, determining the likely tracks these storms will follow, and seamanship methods to be adopted by experienced sailors whenever they may happen to be caught in a particularly violent hurricane. With numerous mathematical formulae. Includes two ribbon-tied celluloid compass cards in pockets on each paste-down. Boards slightly soiled, front inner hinge cracked, some edge-bumping, paper label near head of spine, occasional marginal foxing, else vg. 350.00
