STEVENS, Kenneth R. Border Diplomacy : The Caroline and McLeod Affairs in Anglo-American-Canadian Relations, 1837-1842. Tuscaloosa and London : The University of Alabama Press, (1989). First Edition. Pp [i]-xii,(2),1-225,(1).Illustrated. Map. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, silver lettering to spine. “Bord er Diplomacy examines Anglo-American relations in the context of the Caroline amd McLeod affairs of 1837 to 1842, precipitated when British forces, provoked by American participation in the Canadian rebellion, attacked the American steamboat Caroline in New York waters. Thye boat was towed into the middle of the Niagara River and set afire before being released to go over the falls. Later, one American was found slain on the dock. The result was a diplomatic crisis between the United States and Britain, which was aggravated when New York officials arrested and threatened to execute a Canadian deputy sheriff, Alexander McLeod, for his alleged participation in the Caroline raid. In part, this is a study of how the United States and Britain moved to the edge of war over this event, then managed to negotiate their differences to peaceful resolution.” - from the dj.
