2 MacKENZIE, W. Roy (collected by). LAWS, G. Malcolm Ballads and Sea Songs from Nova Scotia.
Folklore Associates, Inc., Hatboro, PA , 1963,
MacKENZIE, W. Roy (collected by). Ballads and Sea Songs from Nova Scotia. Foreword by G. Malcolm Laws, Jr. Hatboro, Pennsylvania : Folklore Associates, Inc., 1963. Pp (6),i-ix,(1),[iii]-xxxvi,(2),[1]- 421,(7). Illustrated. Index. 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. A facsimile reprint of the1928 original edition. A collection of 162 ballads and songs, several rete lling tales of famous ship battles (The Chesapeake and the Shannon), ships lost at sea ("The Old Ramillies", "The Wreck of the Atlantic"), brave sea-faring men ("Frank Fidd", "We're All Went to Sea") and dastardly pirates of days gone by ("Captain Kidd", "Kelly the Pirate"), in addition to a selection of more romantic endeavours ("Fair Margaret and Sweet William","The Blaeberry Courtship"). Many have several versions of the same ballad included. “Significant contributions to scholarship are not produced by accident but result from a happy combination of training, skill, and industry. Ballads and Sea Songs from Nova Scotia has the distinction of being both a pioneering collection and a classic in its field. Long out of print and always in demand, the book now reappears to grace the shelves of those who have regretted its absence and to reestablish its place as a model for collectors and editors. This is not a 'popular' collection, if by popular one means a book designed to reach a large public of uncertain knowledge and undiscriminating taste. The market is glutted with such publications, casually edited compilations of vague provenience often representing the repertories of public performers and exploiters of folksong. Professor Mackenzie's book belongs to another type altogether, fundamentally it is scholarly; that is, it is based on expert knowledge and displays the highest standards of thoroughness and accuracy. Its structure is deceptively simple, since it consists merelyof headnotes and texts, with a few dozen tunes added by way of illustratio n. But the work which went into the final product can be appreciated only by those who have attempted similar tasks.” (from the Foreword). Spine faded, else very good. 70.00
