Some illustrations in the text. 8vo, blue cloth. An account of New York and New England's Fall River Line of steamers, and in particular of the queen of the fleet, the beautiful and dependable side-wheeler Priscilla, once a familiar sight on Long Island Sound. "A modest advertisement appearing inthe Boston Advertiser on May 19, 1847, announced that 'the new steamer Bay State, Captain J. J. Comstock, will leave Fall River for New York this eve ning on the arrival of the cars from Boston. ' However insignificant that single-column notice may have been, it chronicled a highly significant eventin the history of American transportation. The 1847 train and steamer comb ination marked the opening of what was to become the most famous as well asthe oldest 'through route' in America. Uninterruptedly, on substantially t he same schedule for ninety subsequent years, the Fall River Line provided a service between New York and New England which was so safe, dependable, and luxurious as to become internationally celebrated. [...] "This Centennial volume is a wholly inadequate tribute to the craftsmanship and seamanshipwhich made the Fall River Line outstanding in the golden age of steamboati ng. It is the author's hope that in these pages those who knew the Line andits queen, the majestic Priscilla, will capture anew the atmosphere of the stately steamers and the romance of voyaging Long Island Sound; that those of a new era will become acquainted with an American institution which can never be forgotten!" - from the foreword.
