Pp 3-11 contain comments and testimonials on McCawley and his work,(especially the use of Cape Breton English) from the likes of Kenneth Lesl ie, Prof.McOdrum of Dalhousie, Molly Beresford, W.Ross, of C.B., and the Hon. John Doull of New Glasgow, "who knows the Scots folk well". My grandfather's comments : You are perfectly right in your foreword. There is certainly no Cape Breton dialect. There is an accent in all the Highland Counties of Nova Scotia which varies quite considerably in the different Counties. For that matter, the Gaelic spoken in the different Counties of Nova Scotia itself varies greatly. There are also some picturesque expressions peculiar to Cape Breton just as there area also some expressions peculiar to Pictou County. It is the accent and the unusual expressions that give to Cape Breton stories and Cape Breton poetry a good deal of their charm. It is true also that the full effect of these stories and poems can not be written, but it requires the experience of those who have heard the stories in their original freshness to properly appreciate them.
