This is a well researched episode in a conflict between England’s eighteenth century Revenue service and the local smugglers of the county of Dorset. Smuggling, an integral part ofthe regional economy was dealt a significant blow because of the involveme nt of the navy. Larger, better equipped naval ships manned by experienced crews that were motivated by profit created a formidable deterrent to the illegal trade. The tragedy of this development as that it resulted in the escalation of violence that culminated in the Battle of Mudeford. Very good. 20.00
