7 THEROUX, Paul McCurry, Steve Imperial Way : By Rail from Peshawar to Chittagong . First American Edition in dustjacket
Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1985, 1985 0395393906 / 9780395393901
THEROUX, Pau and Steve McCURRY. The Imperial Way : By Rail from Peshawar to Chittagong. Boston : Houghton Mifflin, 1985. First Printing. Pp 143. Illustrated with colour photographs throughout. Large 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine.

Photographs by Steve McCurry.

Chronicles an illustrated railway journey through India, from Peshawar, full of Afghan refugees, through Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, to flooded Chittagong on the Bay of Bengal.

The Imperial Way comes to life with Theroux's prose and Steve McCurry's superb, prize-winning colour photographs. Paul Theroux has been here before and has described it memorably in The Great Railway Bazaar. On his revisit, he began in Peshawar, up near the Khyber Pass; journeyed through Islamabad and Lahore to India and Simla, the Himalayan foothill town of Kipling's stories; through New Delhi and then Agra where the Taj Mahal stands; through the high-country tea plantations of Darjeeling; on to Calcutta; and finally into flooded Chittagong on the Bay of Bengal.

Map endpapers. 8vo, black cloth spine, brown paper covered boards, gilt lettering to spine. "Vowing to arrive in China without jet lag, Paul Theroux joined a tour that made its way by rail from London to Mongolia, stopping at Paris and Waraw and in the Soviet Union. Reaching China by this unconventional overland route proved nothing short of hilarious and never less than eye-opening about who goes to China and why. Then, through Inner Mongolia to Peking andShanghai, Mr Theroux and his fellow travelers rode trains and discovered t hat in some ways China is changing, and in others is still as ancient as its ruins and just as bound by tradition. [...] In 'Riding the Iron Rooster',his practiced eye, adventurous spirit, and rich prose produce a vital memo ir, full of people and talk -- warm, outspoken conversations about the private life of China today, the Cultural Revolution, and Mao; about writing novels, growing fruit, and the thousand details of everyday life; about discontent, patriotism, and the possibility of a better life in America." - fromthe dj.
