STEVENSON, Sheila. Colchester Furniture Makers: A study by the Colchester Historical Museum of Colchester County 19th Century furniture makers and their work. "In 1978 a volunteer committee was formed at the Colchester Historical Museum to research and record nineteenth-century furniture makers of Colchester County. This was undertaken with a view to mounting an exhibit of their work at the Museum during the summer of 1979, as a suitable contribution to the celebration of the centennial of municipal government in Colchester County. Following promotion of the study through media,written, and personal contacts, the task began. Each committee member conv assed an assigned area of the county. The information gathered indicated a surprisingly large number of makers and a wealth of hitherto unwritten history. We learned not only about the maker, but something of his tools, the shop or factory in which he labored, and a glimpse into the socio-economic conditions that existed in his community. The committee was encouraged to produce a book that would record for future generations this chapter of our county's history." - from the preface.
