6 SPENDER, Stephen Love-Hate Relations : A Study of Anglo-American Sensibilities.. First Edition in dustjacket
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1974,
SPENDER, Stephen. Love-Hate Relations : A Study of Anglo-American Sensibilities. London : Hamish Hamilton, (1974). First UK Edition. Pp (8),[ix]-xviii,(2),[3]-246. 8vo, light blue cloth, silver lettering to spine. "This Professor Spender's major literary study, the result of a lifetime's work and reflection. It deals critically and analjytically with the whole range of British-American cultural relations starting with Emerson and Margaret Fuller through James, Eliot and Pound down to the present. It is the story of a British Culture obsessed with its tradition, confronting an America in searchof new possibilities, and of the way in which the older society ultimately pfaes to look to the new one for sources of energy, while the new one turn s to the older one for means of stability. Hardly a major author on either side of the Atlantic is not involved in the relationship, and so, in the course of this book, Spender deals with nearly the whole of American and British literature from the nineteenth century to the present. The result is a landmark of literary criticism." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction. 1.The Immense Advantage. 2. The Spectre of Americanization. 3. 7 SPENDER, Stephen SOPHOCLES Oedipus Trilogy, The. King Oedipus; Oedipus at Colonus; Antigone. First Edition in dustjacket
Faber and Faber, London / Boston, 1985, ISBN:0571138349
SPENDER, Stephen. The Oedipus Trilogy : King Oedipus; Oedipus at Colonus; Antigone. A version by Stephen Spender. London / Boston : Faber and Faber, (1985). First Edition. Pp (10),11-199,(1). 8vo. blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "This is a revised version of a play in three acts, based on the Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonos and Antigone of Sophocles. It is intended pnmariy for stage performance, but also to be read. It was commissioned for the Oxford Playhouse and performed there and at Cambridge in the spring of 1983. The printed text is a considerable development of Stephen Spender's original stage version. Influenced by the experience of hearing his words acted before live audiences, he has treated his stage version as a draft for apoetic drama which remained to be written. The text now published has very little in common with the first commissioned draft. As he explains in his long and interesting Introduction, his aim has been to present the hearer and the reader with the story of the House of Labdacus in the clearest possible language, sometimes verse and sometimes prose. He discusses the three great tragedies in detail and explains the problems facing a poet and dramatist adapting them for a modern audience." (from the dj). Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 15.00
