Newspaper) Times 5846 GAMBIER, James MALBON, Capt. Copy of a Letter from Vice-Admiral Gambier... 1803, (Newspaper). "Copy of a Letter from Vice-Admiral Gambier, Commander in Chief of his Majesty's Ships and Vessels at Newfoundland, to Sir Evan Nepean, Bart., dated on board the Isis, at St.John's, the 20th Aug. 1803". An article in The Times, No.5846, Friday, October 21, 1803. Folio, one sheet folded. For James Gambier, the then governor and commander-in-chief of Newfoundland, see DCB VI:270-1, ENL II:464. Vice-Admiral Ganbier quotes excerpts from a letter from Capt. Malbon of H.M.Ship Aurora reporting on the surrender of St.Peter's. "On the 30th June, about Four o'Clock in the Morning, I made the Island of Peters; and at Five sent the Large Cutter and Launch, manned and armed with a Twelve-Pound Carronade, under the Command of Lieutenant Richard Longfield Davies, and Lieutenant Baillie, of the Marines to oblige the town to surrender, or begin the attack...". On everything being secured, Lt. Davies is sent off with directions to scour the coast and take possession of Great and Little Miquelon. (p.6-7, approx. 450 words). Unusual in that it appears on the front page, generally the front page of The Times was devoted to advertisements. Vg. 160.00 Price:
