(DUBUFFET, Jean). Jean Dubuffet : Paintings, 1943-1957. 29th April to 23rd May 1958. [With extracts from a preface by Jean Dubuffet. Introduction by Georges Limbour]. London: Arthur Tooth & Sons Ltd., 31 Bruton Street, 1958. Pp. (44). Unpaginated. Illustrated in black-and-white. Square 8vo, decorated stapled black and cream card covers. "The earliest paintings of Jean Dubuffet that we know of are dated 1942. Although he was born in 1901, and although he had painted for many years, it was only in 1944 that he agreed to hold his first exhibition. Since he had destroyed his earlier works, he has behind him today only 16 years of public activity. In spite of this short period of time, his painting has passed through many changes, through many periods of colour and material. Undergoing many metamorphoses of technique, soem of them lasting only a few months, the longest a year or two. Even with these periods, more often than not each picture has differed in techniquefrom the one preceding it. Therefore, it would take far too long for me to consider his oeuvre in its chronological development, and I am forced to t ake a general, panoramic view of it." - from the introduction. A black and white catalogue of 26 paintings and 5 drawings (with one photo of the artist). Small red smudge to bottom right corner of leaf with painting #8, name stamp to first couple of leaves, light spine nicking, else very good. Due to its small size, shipping costs should be cheaper than quoted. 27.00
