RAWSON, Geoffrey. Pandora's Last Voyage. (London) : Longmans, (1963). FirstEdition. Pp (4),[v]-vii,(5),3-165,(1) + 4 pages of illustrations. Maps in text. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. An account of the grueling 1791 voyage of HMS Pandora in search of HMS Bounty and her mutineers; she didn't manage to find the ship, but apprehended some of Bounty's crew in Tahiti. Pandora struck a reef on the return voyage and sank, and the small boat voyage that ensued rivals even the famous journey of Bligh et al. "In 1791, H.M.S. Pandora was sent to the Pacific to find the notorious Bounty and bring the mutineers back to justice in England. Though Pandora never found the object of her mission and failed to apprehend the main party on Pitcairn Island, she eventually rounded up those of the mutineers who had elected to stay on Tahiti. These had to face Pandora's brutal Captain Edwards, and some were inexcusably lost, drowned in their manacles when Pandora ran on to a reef. The wreck was succeeded by a hazardous and astonishing passage inopen boats to safety - to trial and possible death. Contemporary documents form the basis of Geoffrey Rawson's rousing account of the voyage, of Pand ora's crew and of her prisoners; of the Bounty midshipman George Stewart who married a beautiful Tahitian and whose romance was celebrated by Byron; of Mary Bryant, the girl convict from Botany Bay; and of the aimiable peopleof the ' Island Paradises' to whom the coming of ships' crews to the South Seas brought little but sorrow and degradation. Set against a background o f perilous reefs and uncharted tropical seas, their story has all the powerof history, and the pace and excitment of adventure." - from the dj. Conte nts : Part I. 1.
