"The Ruin of Representation in Modernist Artand Texts investiggates the semiotics of literature and the visual arts, f ocusing on the influence of modem art on the writings ond aesthetic theories of James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, the English vorricists and the Russian futurists. This comparative study analyzes the the strategies and theories ofabstraction in the arts as they affected literary texts like Ulysses. The innovations that resulted from attempts to abolish representational conventions include: multiplication of point of view; fragmentation and collage; the exploration of random or uconscious operations; and the introduction of new temporal and spatial forms. Isaak further investigates the ideological implications of these formal innovations, showing, for example, how Stein'spoetry critiques patriarchal language. Distguished literary critic Hugh Ke nner affirms that her "clarification, making use of the best poststructuralist methods, will be helpful to all future historians of the English-language avant-garde in the first third of the century"."
