WILLIAMS, John R. The Conservative Party of Canada : 1920-1949. Durham, N.C.: Duke University Press, 1956. First Edition. Pp (6),[vii]-x,(6),[3]-242,+10 pp plates. Index. 8vo, green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "The activ ities and fortunes of the Conservative party in Canada from 1920, when the party was reconstituted, through the deteat in the election of 1949 are a chronicle of decline; the party has suffered frequent defeats and has exerted less and less influence on the national government. After surveying Conservadve accomplishments before i920, Mr. Williams sets out to discover the causes of this decline in the recent history of the party. Much of his information comes from Conservative leaders and other close observers and from collections of private papers. Carl Wittke writes: "once having started reading, I couldn't stop ... his analysis of Canadian practices and procedures, party conventions, organization, election campaigns, and the whole busines s of how parties and party government really work, in reality, ought to prove valuable not only to Canadians, but also to Americans who are interestedin making comparisons." The declining influence of the Conservatives is of considerable importance. Up to the present both major parties in Canada ha ve had similar economic, political, and social principles. If Government and Opposition are to alternate between the Liberal party and a doctrinaire socialist party, then disruptive changes in the Canadian political and economic systems may well occur."
