"Edward Wilson is one of the great figures of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. He was a member, as zoologist and doctor, on Discovery in 1901-4 and Terra Nova, 1910-13. He was one of the party that died on their return from the South Pole early in 1912 and Scot wrote of him, just beforehe died himself, 'a brave, true man, the best of comrades and the staunche st of friends'. His diary of the Discovery expedition is now published for the first time and illustrated with forty-seven reproductions of his own watercolour paintings." - from the dustjacket.
