KOPTAYEVA, Antonina. Ivan Ivanovich : A Novel in two parts. Moscow : Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1952. Pp (8),9-[548](2),+ frontispiece portrait. 8vo, grey cloth, lettered n black, with a blue and black vignette to front board. "The novel Ivan Ivanovlch takes its name fromn the hero of the book, Dr. Ivan Ivanovich Arzhanov. Ivan Ivanovich, a neurosurgeon, evinces the finest qualities of the Soviet man, one who devotes his entire life to creative effort and to the service of the people. He becomes head of a hospital far in the Soviet North, where his life is closely bound up with the lives of the native Yakuts, Evenns ai)d Evenks. With subtle underhanding the author gives us a picture of these peoples. But Dr. Arzhanov, however outstanding as a surgeon and public figure, is unable to build hanpines in his own life. He treats his wife as if she were charming child and fails to perceive the deep dissatisfaction she is experiencing. And so another man stepsInto his place, becoming her friend and advisor, helping her to find a pla ce for herself in the world of larger interests. Through the characters of this book, Koptayeva tries to show that the Soviet family must be founded not only on legal equality between man and wife but on true comradeship and mutual respect. Without that there cannot be real friendship or genuine love. The conflict tha arises between Dr. Arzhanov and his wife is the conflict of the new, communist concept of the family, and old-fashioned notions offamily life, from which Dr. Arzhanov, a progressive member of Soviet socie ty in every other respect, frees himself only when tragedy enters his life." (from the dj). Faint waterstain to back cover, else very good in rubbed and edgeworn dustjacket. With Errata slip tipped in at rear. 40.00
