SCOTT, J.M. Heather Mary New York : E. P. Dutton & Company, Inc., (July) 1953. Third American Printing. Pp (6),7-224. 8vo, blue cloth, silver lettering to spine. James Maurice Scott (b. December 13, 1906, Egypt - d. March 12,1986, Huntingdon) was a British explorer and writer. Smith and Weller, Sea Fiction Guide 2153. "A foreboding of disaster, and a chilling uncanny feel ing of mystery runs through this weird story of the sea in which Richard Charrington and a crew of four set sail from England for Bermuda in the Heather Mary, a small yacht. The members of the crew are inexperienced, and although they have been acquainted with their skipper, they are not his close friends. But they have all been devoted to Heather Mary, his deceased wifr. Gradually, through each man's recollections the story unfolds, and the gapsin Heather's life are fitted in, pieced together in snatches as the crew s trug-gles to keep the small craft on its course in the raging seas. Soon, as every episode drops into place, the horror tension mounts, and then it dawns on the reader that there is something diabolical and maniacal about this voyage. This inexplicable oppression looms like a hypnotic spell, and themen begin sense it, and wonder vabout it. Emotions are strained to the bre aking point. This is an exceptionally thrilling and absorbing noveel. The writer's descriptions of the sea and the techniques of handling the boat aresuperb, accurate, thoroughly realistic and exciting. Intrigue permeates a story which has many inscrutable levels of conflict and malevolence, and which builds up almost unbearable pressure before the climax and final resolution. Mr. Scot combined an unquestioned talent for creating authentic atmosphere and background with a bizarre and utterly engrossing story of violence at sea." (from the dj).
