DE BONDT, John. Canada on Wheels : A Portfolio of Early Canadian Cars. [Ottawa] : Oberon Press, (1970). First Printing. Pp. (6),[7]-[48]. Illustrated with old advertisements, five of which are in colour. 4to, green cloth withgilt lettering to spine. Designed by Michael Macklem. "The automobile is o lder than Confederation [as per the preface, deemed to be created by ThomasTurnbull in 1851, in Saint John, NB, with a three-wheeled wagon driven by 'a crank of peculiar construction']. It wasn't until after the turn of the century, however, that cars became popular. Between 1900 and 1933 more than125 different makes were produced in this country. With few exceptions, al l that is left of these cars -- many of them rare and beautiful -- are the advertisements in old newspapers and magazines. From his remarkable collection of automobile memorabilia, John de Bondt has assembled this charming and evocative picture history of motoring in Canada. From the outset the motor car has been a symbol of the good life for ordinary men and women, and for this reason early car ads like those in this collection offer a unique insight into the Canadian past, its likes and dislikes, its needs and desires, its hopes and fears. This is a book, not only for car buffs, but also foranyone with an eye or an ear for the sights and sounds of yesterday." - fr om the dustjacket [and the preface].
