KINGSTON-MANN, Esther, and Timothy MIXTER (eds.). Peasant Economy, Culture, and Politics of European Russia, 1800-1921. With the Assistance of Jeffrey Burds. Princeton, New Jersey : Princeton University Press, (1991). First P rinting. Pp (4),[v]-xviii,(2),[3]-443,(5). Illustrated. Maps. Index. 8vo, green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "This collection of original essays provides a rare in-depth look at peasant life in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European Russia. It is the first English-language text to deal extensively with peasant women and patriarchy; the role of magic, healing, and medicine in village life; communal economic innovation; rural poverty and labor migration from the village perspective; the agricultural hiring market as workers' turf; and the regional components of the late nineteenth-century agrarian crisis. This work also discusses peasants in terms of theirperspectives on seigneurial paternalism, their protest in the pre-emancipa tion era, and their responses to outsiders. As a whole, these essays exposethe inner workings of a peasantry whose values, behavior, and institutions may have constituted, to a far greater degree than has been realized, a pa rt of, rather than an obstacle to, Russia's historical development in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The majority of the Russian population is studied here for the first time on the basis of archival research that reflects the regional variation of the empire. Because these essays draw on conceptual insights from studies of other geographic areas and from the work of such scholars as John Berger, Teodor Shanin, and James Scott, they facilitate comparisons between Russian peasants and those in other parts of the world. In addition to the editors, contributors are Rodney Bohac, Jeffrey Burds, David Christian, Orlando Figes, Samuel Ramer, Scott Seregny, Stephen Wheatcroft, Elvira Wilbur, and Christine Worobec. Esther Kingston-Mann is Ford Service Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts,Boston. Timothy Mixter is Assistant Professor of History at Temple Univers ity." (from the dj).
