RUBIA, Geraldine. A Poem in My Soup : A Newfoundland Sampler with Selected Poetry. St. John's, NL : Flanker Press Limited, (2010). First Printing of Second Edition. Pp (10),1-226,(4). 8vo, white photo-illustrated cardcovers. See ENL IV:654-5 for Rubia (b.1929). Geraldine 'Gerry' Rubia, née Chafe .(b. July 4, 1929, Brooklyn, New York [of Newfoundland parents] - d. October 22, 2016, St. John's). 'The idea for a book of recipes and poems was conceived by Geraldine Chafe Rubia in 1969. Being enthusiastic about both cooking and poetry, she thought it only natural to combine the two in one book. This book also includes Newfoundland expressions and folklore; it is a co-operative work involving dozens of the author's friends, relatives, and acquaintances from scattered parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the case of some St. John's contributors, the author has listed their hometowns to indicate that they brought their recipes and folklore from other parts of the province. Also included are a few recipes that have been brought from other countries by people who have chosen to live in Newfoundland and Labrador. Accompanying the recipes and Newfoundland witticisms are original works of poetry by Geraldine Chafe Rubia." - from rear cover. "As early as 1969, I conceived the idea of putting together a book of recipes and poems. Being enthusiastic about both cooking and poetry, I thought it a natural combination. However it was not until after an encouraging conversation with Ivan Jesperson in January 1979 that I finally went to work on it. With the decision toinclude traditional Newfoundland recipes, expressions, and folklore the pr oject turned out to be a co-operative one involving dozens of friends, relatives. and acquaintances from scattered parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. With regard to the poetry, I stuck to my original intention of including o nly poems that I wrote myself." - p.ix. Contents: Scoffs; Afters; Swallies. With recipe and poem indices. Very good. Signed, without inscription, by R ubia on the title-page. 20.00
