Wengle, Marian Engle: An Annotate d Bibliography A7, Spadoni & Donnelly 3234. "On the surface, this is the simple story of a year in the life of the residents of Ratsbane Place, a trendy Toronto street of converted rowhouses. (Although, as Roger said, 'it could hardly be trendy when the twins went to the bathroom on the lawn'). It begins in the winter of 1979. By then, as the author describes: 'Harriet's tribe was no longer a band of fiendish infants. Vinnie and Sylvia had given up sleeping together and were concentrating on breeding chattering lories and macaws, and Roger had given up a number of committees... and become curiously domestic. Marshallene gave up her second marriage and returned permanently to the street with a case of Scotch. The place no longer looked new and trendy. It looked comfortable, and more or less was: in short, it was ready for Mrs. Saxe.' Mrs. Saxe turns out to be a mysterious octogenarian with short, stubby legs and a sunny disposition who arrives in the middle of the night on Harriet Ross' doorstep with a bicycle. Harriet's life is quite complicated enough, what with seven children, two mad sisters, a secret lover and only sporadic employment. Mrs. Saxe, however, will not be discouraged and soon moves in, bicycle and all, becoming a gleeful participant in thelife of the street." - from the dustjacket.
