LOWRY, Malcolm. Ultramarine : a novel. Toronto: Clarke, Irwin & Company Limited, in association with Jonathan Cape, (1963). First Canadian Edtion. Pp.(4)5-203,(1) . 8vo, blue cloth. Woolmer A1d. "Malcolm Lowry's first novel, written when he was in early twenties and published thirty years ago, was revised by the author before his death in 1957. It is the story of Dana Hilliot's first voyage, as mess boy on the freighter Oedipus Tyrannus, bound for Singapore and Bombay; of his struggle to win the approval of his shipmates, a rough, derisive lot, trying to match their example in the bars and bordellos of the Chinese ports, while at the same time remaining faithful to his first love, Janet, back home in England. Alternating between Dana's ownnarrative and the ribald and colourful language of the seamen's conversati on, the novel depicts a boy's initiation into the company of men. "Based ona journal Lowry kept on his first voyage to the Far East when he was ninet een, Ultramarine is the work of a born writer, and sounds the themes - including the obsession with the sea - that were to occupy Malcolm Lowry all his writing life. It contains a new introduction by the author's widow." - from the dj. Very good, with a few scrapes to front panel of edgeworn dust-jacket. 60.00
