"This book is a record of the evolution of Canadian Naval Aviation over a period of 44years, 1918-1962. By way of introduction, there is a short history of the recruitment of officers in Canada for the Royal Naval Air Service during the First World War and the subsequent careers of the most famous of them. Few Canadians are aware that their country, in 1918, was one of the first to form a separate naval air arm. The opening chapter presents a detailed account of this most interesting early endeavour. Between the wars a small Royal Canadian Navy, as discussed in Chapter Two, had to depend on others to keep it up to date in regard to current thought and development in air/sea warfare. The importance of Naval Aviation to Canada was demonstrated again byevents in the close-fought Battle of the Atlantic in the Second World War, and subsequent chapters show how a re-established air arm became a key ele ment in the modern Service. Canada's naval role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization being an ant-submarine one, the final chapter reviews Naval Aviation's capability and effective power for this vital task." - from front dj flap.
