"Maintaining his momentum of writings on pioneering American artists, Richard Love has produced a [criticalbiographical study] on a great post-impressionist -- Theodore Earl Butler. After studying in New York [...] Butler went to France where he worked at several academies. he also trained at the atelier of Carolus-Duran, a member of the juste milieu who walked comfortably in the ranks of the avant-garde and the academicians. Having immersed himself in the most progressive trends by the summer of 1888, Butler went to Giverny, a small village on the Seine where Monet had made his new home several years earlier. Here, Butler,Theodore Robinson, Theodore Wendel, John Leslie Breck, Willard L. Metcalf, and a few others became the pioneer group of American impressionists. Howe ver, Butler went even further in pursuit of a unique style by combining several modern influences with those of Monet to produce an imagery which Lovereveals as not only very advanced but actually prophetic of the Nabis' sty le of a decade later." - from the dj.
