"It has been my endeavour in the follwing chapters to prove that the Catholic citizenof our country is a good citizen, and that the ideals underlying the Catho lic school movement are in perfect accord with the ideals of every Christian patriot worthy of the name in our land today. "For my purpose, I have taken a small square from the tapestry of present-day Canadian life. I have separated the warp from the woof, by selecting a couple of typical families, and a number of characters typical of those to be readily found in any Canadian community today. To the families, and to the various characters, I have applied the acid test of adversity: bereavement, poverty and loss of reputation: while I subjected the whole sample of fabric to the gruelling test of an industrial upheaval." - from the foreword.
