MONTGOMERY, L.M. The Green Gables Letters : From L.M. Montgomery to EphraimWeber 1905-1909. Edited by Wilfred Eggleston. Toronto : The Ryerson Press, (January 1960). First Edition. Pp 102. 8vo, yellow cloth. Russell 624. "Th ese wise and witty letters by the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' were written at Cavendish, on the 'old north shore' of Prince Edward Island, and addressed to a friend in far-away Alberta. The correspondence began in 1902, when a homesteader of literary tastes wrote a 'fan letter' to a freelance just beginning to make her mark in the American magazines. Ephraim Weber wasliving in his pioneer shack or 'den' about fifty miles north of Calgary wh en the exchange of letters opened. To his great and increasing delight he found a personality after his own heart in this industrious versifier and weaver of girls' stories; and the correspondence flourished. L.M. Montgomery,in turn, discovered in the Alberta homesteader a rare and original spirit of increasing fascination. It was a Platonic attachment on both sides, but so vital was the comradeship that the correspondence thus begun in 1902 ceased only with her last illness nearly forty years later." - from the introduction.
