PRATT, E.J. Studies in Pauline Eschatology and Its Background. Accepted by the University of Toronto as a Thesis for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Toronto : William Briggs, 1917. First Edition. Pp (2),3-203,(5),+ 3 fldgcharts. 8vo, green cloth. Laakso A22, Watters p.828, Rhodenizer p.391, Lau gher p.456. Not in O'Dea. See David G. Pitt's E.J.Pratt: The Truant Years, 1882-1927 (1984), pp.152-156, 241, from which the following is taken : "[...] a model of logical, orderly, scholarly discourse, carefully documented, fortified with voluminous and impressive charts and tables, and attractively and lucidly presented. [...]."But not surprisingly, the book had little appeal for the public at large and most of the 500 copies printed went unsold. For years afterwards Pratt was to be painfully reminded of his lost investment by frequently encountering copies, priced at a few cents each, amongthe promiscuous piles of unwanted tomes heaped on the remainder tables of Toronto book shops. It was not until January 1932 that Ryerson Press (sucessor to William Briggs) finally disposed of its remaining stocks in a mannergraphically suggested by the following correspondence between Pratt and Ry erson's editor, Lorne Pierce : Dear Ned: The stock department are loath toconsign your Pauline Eschatology to the Eschatological incinerator without your written say so. Will you please me good enough to give me your writte n authority. Sincerely yours, Lorne Dear Lorne, You are most welcome to consign these Eschatological monstrosities to the everlasting flames where they should have gone in the first place. I burned some fifty copies of them seven years ago and the house has remained hot ever since. I calculate that twenty tons of coal was saved thereby. This is your authorization to give them a hasty and fiery dispatch.. Ned. Fine. Rare. 1,500.00
